Okay, That's Just Stupid
"Spices" are listed under my LJ interests.  Because, y'know, I like spices.  Garlic and nutmeg and vanilla, ajowan and fennel pollen and Australian wattle seed.  But you will not find out that I'm interested in "spices" by searching for that term under Interests.  You will not find out that anyone is interested in "spices".  Because, apparently, only racists would be looking for that term.

This is crazy! Do they think we'll be posting about French Mustard moving in and taking Australian Wattle Seed's jobs?

It totally hacks me off when people have the smarts to do incredibly complicated code, but they can't figure out simple, basic logic. Guys, run your filter through an ASCII dictionary file before you put it into production to keep the false positives to a minimum!

And that's setting aside the debatable question of what happens when in-groups use slurs to refer to themselves, as certainly happens in the gay community. You may not like it (I don't), but it's hardly vile! Maybe it would be wise to screen by filter but then have reel hyoomins review them for appropriateness? If Youtube can do it for their four skadillion files, you'd think that LJ would be able to do it for their user base. Heck, do the popular crowdsourcing thing and have the community scanned by the community! As long as you use more than a few ratings for each record and a suitably random selection of people, it should work really well.

*sigh*

This is LJ's dumbest move yet, I think.

And that's a mighty big list to claw its way to the front of.

Unrelated to this post's topic in any way ...

But that book (series, really) I was gushing about at your party?

The Valor books by Tanya Huff ([info]andpuff, incidentally).

3 now: The Better Part of Valor, Valor's Choice, and Heart of Valor. The former two are available in an omnibus, A Confederation of Valor. All quite good, and very grunt-level military.
